SENIOR citizens at the Little Sisters of the Poor in Batu Lanchang Lane, Air
Itam, Penang, had a special surprise when Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai
dropped by to distribute cash aid under the Senior Citizens’ Appreciation
programme.
Wong handed out RM100 each to the 50 residents of the home and also made a personal contribution of RM2,000 as funding expenses.
According to Wong, the donations would ensure that the senior citizens would have a better and more comfortable stay.
“Under the programme, all registered senior citizens will get RM100 each.
“We’ve started distributing the money since March 8 at various Maybank branches throughout Penang. They must collect the money from their respective branches,” he said.
“In Air Itam, we have a total of 7,525 recipients and after the closing date on March 21, 7,123 people have received their money,” he added.
He said new applicants and those who have yet to receive their money due to a change of address, would be getting their letters during the second round of disbursement.
According to Wong, his visit meant that the residents in the home need not go to the bank to collect their money.
“I made this special arrangement to hand them the money,” he said.
The home’s assistant Sister Joanna said they were delighted with the aid as they depended on donations from the public and the government.
